What am I a Disciple of?

It's about 4am on Monday morning and I am sitting here searching through the Scriptures with this pressing question, "What is a disciple of Jesus Christ?"

Can I just express my heart to you this morning? Well, I am going to any way whether you like it or not. I have had the opportunity to speak in a lot of churches over the last couple of years and something seems to be common in them all. Every church is full of nice people, but where are the disciples of Jesus? I mean, where are those people who are making major adjustments in their lives to follow Christ?

As I read the story of how the disciples left everything to follow Jesus and see how many people in churches refuse to change anything in their lives, I wonder what has the definition of being a disciple become. I know there are some great people in churches, but the facts are:
  • the divorce rate of church members is the same as those not professing to be a disciple of Christ.
  • Men inside the church confess looking at pornography at the same rate as those outside the church.
  • Over half of the young people currently in youth groups will leave the church within the first year of college, many will never return.
  • Baptisms are declining.
  • Church attendance in most churches are plateaued and declining.
  • Churches are closing their doors at an alarming rate
  • Many churches seem to focus on their buildings, how many people attend, and how much money was given

Seriously, if our churches are to be making disciples, then we suck at it! But before I can cast stones at everyone else I must take a look at myself. What am I a disciple of? A question I will ponder this week, hope you will join me on this journey.
